New Video: Godwon Feat. Ikechukwu & Sauce Kid - 2 Much Money

Check out this new video by former US-based Nigerian rapper, Godwon featuring Ikechukwu & Sauce Kid. And they claim they gat "2 Much Money". Video directed by Clarence Peters.

For rap music lovers, this is more than good news. After a brief hiatus from the rap game, rapper Gino is back in with a new single titled “I’m So Fly” feat. YQ and Naeto C. In 2005, Gino revolutionized the game when he dropped his instant classic video ‘No Be God’ and later released his debut album
(which many regard as being one of the best rap albums in Nigeria) Pain Plus Work. The album also generated another hit Farabale which was a club hanger.

While many thought the rapper took time off, he was actually in the booth taking his time to record a body of work that will be rated flawless. With such high standards it is said that Gino has scrapped songs worth two albums. Now satisfied with what he has, the C.E.O of MOBB Records is finally set to drop his highly anticipated sophomore album.

Kicking his re-entrance is this new single which was produced by the *SoundCity and Future Awards Producer of the Year*, Sossick. Gino’s second album is scheduled to drop later in the year.

FELA!, the landmark Broadway musical, which won three Tony Awards (Broadway’s highest honor) including Best Choreography (Bill T. Jones), is coming to Lagos from April 20th to 25th. It will be performed at the prestigious Eko Hotel’s New Expo Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria. This critically lauded musical will star its original Broadway cast with Sahr Ngaujah reprising his Tony-nominated role of Fela Kuti with music provided by the internationally renowned Antibalas as well as other members of the New York City Afro-beat community.

Concurrently with the Broadway production, FELA! opened and triumphed at London’s Royal National Theater for a three-month sold-out run. That production was nominated for three Olivier Awards, London theatre’s highest honor, including Best Musical, Best Actor (Sahr Ngaujah) and Best Choreography (Bill T. Jones). This Nigerian engagement will be the first since the closing of the Broadway and London productions and the NTLive performance which was broadcast to in 370 cinemas worldwide.

The aim of FELA! in Lagos is to unite and connect Africans in spirit and unity, to serve as a catalyst for cultural revival in Nigeria, and to celebrate Fela Kuti, for the contribution he has made to Nigeria and the world. FELA! depicts the true story of the legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, whose soulful Afro beat rhythms ignited the spirit of empowerment and cultural awareness in a generation. It is a tale of courage, passion and love featuring Kuti’s captivating music and the visionary direction and choreography of Tony Award winner, Bill T. Jones. FELA! in Lagos is being produced by a Nigerian production company, Broken Shackles in conjunction with Lagos State Government.

Upon its Broadway opening Ben Brantley of The New York Times wrote, “There should be dancing in the streets. The hot (and seriously cool) energy that comes from the musical gospel preached by the title character of Fela! feels as if it could stretch easily to the borders of Manhattan and then across a river or two. There has never been anything on Broadway like this production.” The New York Post’s Elisabeth Vincentelli cheered, “There’s enough energy to short circuit Con Ed.” David Cote of Time Out New York, in giving it 5 stars (out of 5) raved, “Fela! is more than a musical; it’s an ecstatic phenomenon.” And Jennifer Farrar from the Associated Press exclaimed, “An exuberant celebration!”

The English critics were equally effusive after the London premiere of FELA! One critic, Baz Bamigboye of The Daily Mail, summed up the critical sentiment with his review saying FELA! is a “groundbreaking show that shook Broadway and London’s Royal National Theatre to the rafters. Getting Brits to get on their feet and ‘get loose’ as Bill T. Jones puts it, was a rare feat. FELA! pulled it off by sheer exuberance and theatrical showmanship. At the same time, FELA! explored the soul of an artist and the darkness of a government that tried to block what Fela’s beam exposed.”

In addition to rave reviews from critics, FELA! has also won numerous awards and received standing ovations from such personalities as Mick Jagger, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Spike Lee, Ben Okri, Janet Jackson, Denzel Washington, Professor Wole Soyinka, Robert De Niro, and Hugh Jackman. First lady Michelle Obama, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and President Obama’s Head of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano are but three of the dignitaries who have embraced this show.

Bill T. Jones, director and choreographer of FELA!, was recently honored with the prestigious Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts award along with Sir Paul McCartney and Oprah Winfrey. The Kennedy Center Honors are awarded annually for exemplary lifetime achievement in the performing arts. FELA!also won two Astaire Awards for its cast and choreography.

FELA! on Broadway was conceived by Bill T. Jones, Jim Lewis and Stephen Hendel. Its producers include the entertainment legends Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter and Will & Jada Pinkett Smith.

A spokeswoman for Broken Shackles suggests that “with a series of media partners and sponsorships, FELA! in Lagos will be the most talked about show in Nigeria for years to come. We have created sponsorship, branding and advertising opportunities for those who wish to be a part of this historic theatrical event.”

A-Q's Debut Album Sells 15000-Units Worth. Releases First #BlackFriday Freestyle

The 'Names' Rapper released his debut album 'The Past Present and Future' album on the 14th of December. His album which has received good reviews from both print and online media is doing good in sales - putting money in the rapper's pocket and his record label, Hustle Inc's bank account. reviews the album: "All in All AQ Has Delivered one of the Best Hip-Hop Albums  of 2010, Whose Classic nature cannot be denied even by the harshest critics. The Album is Honest, Street, Dark, Lyrical , Humorous, Braggadicious ,Original  and Most Importantly Hip-Hop.What Other Qualities do you need to Label an Album a Classic?? ...and Posterity Would surely Judge him for this Stellar Offering"

"I have a album marketer (AHBU Ventures) that has sold records for every big label in Nigeria but I basically still took on the project with the mindset of an independent artiste. This is all I know, this is my hustle - God blessed hustle with a street team and gigs across town, from Wax Lyrical to Industry Nite with copies of the album" A-Q said. "I can tell you I have made money worth sales of 15,000 CD units." He added.

In celebration and still promoting the album, the rapper would also be giving out music / freestyles every friday via his Twitter account: @ThisisAQ, which he did before his debut album was released last year (last year's Black friday where tracks with complete musical arrangement - verses and chorus but this would just be freestyles). He tagged it '#Blackfriday Freestyle'. The first freestyle where he rapped over Eminem's not afraid instrumental was released today [28 - 01 - 2011].

In the new and first Black Friday freestyle, he raps about his crush on singer Tiwa Savage and reference names of other rappers like Lynxxx,  Rick Ross and CC (Chocolate city)  just after his 'God bless the hustle' opening on the track. While the album might  seem like a mainstream attempt, the lyricist exhibits in this Black friday freestyle - not afraid the very understanding and the technicality in delivery he is renown in the underground Nigeria hiphop circuit.

Digital copies of the album can be bought at,, zoodrums [ with your interswitch card] and soon be available on the store.

His follow up single, Sold out featuring singer Xtrim would be released in February, just before valentine. It is track dedicated to ladies, to be released just in time as the valentine bug bites.

10 Gems for (South) African Hip Hop from Chuck D

Chuck D is an icon of conscious hip hop and a true music revolutionary. Chuck D spoke for 2 hours at the Public Enemy workshop at Red Bull Studios in Cape Town, on the state of hip hop and global music culture. He also spoke extensively on the future of (South) African hip hop.

‎01. Don’t be an ‘Afrimerican’ – don’t copy the US. Be proudly African

02. SA needs an infrastructure that supports local hip hop (DJs / radio / media / blogs)

03. Don’t let corporations (like MTV or Metro FM) dictate your musical / cultural agenda

04. Be accountable for the music you make – words are powerful and have consequences

05. Africa can be a global hip hop powerhouse if it chooses to be. Believe!

06. Embrace indigenous languages – that’s what makes us unique in the world

07. Focus on your live performance – your live show must kick your video’s ass

08. Groups or movements are more powerful than a single person. Be a team. Up your game!

09. Build strong networks in SA, and throughout Africa. Connect the continent

10. Confront difficult issues of race and inequality in South Africa – these are stories people need to hear

Olawale Aremo a.k.a McSkill ThaPreacha is one hell of an Hip-Hop Head, based in Lagos, like most MCs in the game, he started rapping at an early age. He grew bumping his head to the rhythm and rhymes of the likes of Big Snoop Doggy Dogg & The Notorious B.I.G before diverting his full attention to KRS-One, who taught him the A-Z of ‘real hip-hop’ and mutated him from a rapper to the MC he is today.

Mcskill ThaPreacha‘s aim is to change the face of not just Nigerian but African hiphop by preaching the gospel off HH which is what he defines it – “The Truth”. His ability to deliver sick barz on any beat is sure gonna place him among one of the greatest HH has ever made.

His mixtape, titled “Metaphysical Induction” drops this year with collabos from both home and abroad, are all produced by his brother and producer Stormatique. With a perfect combo of student by day and MC by..when music calls…it sure makes this MC a complete package you’ld definately wanna keep an eye on.
