Q&A With Terry Tha Rapman

Apart from Junior & Pretty, a couple of other MCs have contributed immensely in the Nigerian hiphop industry to make it what it is today. It's obvious that the list is endless, so I won't bother mentioning names. But one of such people today, is Terry Tha Rapman, and he'll be sharing with us briefly what the journey for him has been like so far.

Q&A With Terry Tha Rapman

Who is Terry Tha Rapman?
Terry Tha Rapman is Tha Rap.Manifestation to Amateur Niggaz. A gifted Nigerian with superior skills. So am not just a rapper, am an emcee.

Then who is Joe Spazm if I may ask?
Joe Spazm is my alter ego. He is the darker one that doesn't give an eff.

When did you fall in love with Hip Hop, and what was the experience like?
I fell in love with HipHop when I was 16 in secondary school in Kaduna state. I never had friends or relatives abroad so I would dub rap songs from Radio station programmes. I had tapes with Slick Rick, Rakim, and Ice Cube etc. It was a whole new experience because I used to listen to R &B , Afro beat and Pop. But Rap and Hip hop music was too real, so I related easily.

What can you say about the current state of The Nigerian music industry?
It's growing as compared to 6 years ago, especially for HipHop. Marketers are pushing Rap albums with Fuji and all.

What was your favorite track off your first album "Tha Rapman Beginz"?
That would be The's the first song I recorded for the album. I just left Payback Tyme Records and I was broke, mad and all. It was a personal song.

Do we see SWAT ROOT coming back together anytime soon?
We want to get ourselves on ground slid first. We're still good friends.....we talk about it all the time....definately with RuleClean, Mr Baron and the rest.

What should we expect from you this year?
The "Boyz Are Not Smiling" album, plus I'll be touring Europe and America.

What's your definition of a "Real Song"?
A song that comes from your soul. If it's personal, someone out there will feel it.

Who's your favorite rapper/emcee?

Any last word(s) to all your numerous fans out there?
Be real, be original, remember the old school in order to be the future...and have God on your side.

Anticipated Nigerian HipHop Albums 2010

I once asked Saucekid aka Sinzu Sinzu aka the self-acclaimed African Ambassador of Rap music what "Sinzu" meant, and he said "Sinzu is just like indomie spice" (lol....WTF?). That's by the way though. After dropping a couple of singles such as  "Distribution", "Na Me Be Fine Boi" and "Under G", Saucekid is set to take us back to his AFRICAN AMERICAN roots with his forthcoming album (duh?...bros we all know that you're Nigerian even with the American accent and all. I mean...your attitude tells it His album drops 30th July 2010. Album release party holds at Rehab, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The album title "Boyz Are Not Smiling" is fast becoming a popular slogan in Nigeria already, especially among the youths. And for the records, "Sample Remix" off the album by Terry Tha Rapman, which featured Stereoman and Pherowshuz won the best rap single at the just concluded HipHop World Awards 2010. Guest appearances on "Boyz Are Not Smiling" include M.I, Mo'Cheddah, Fecko, Sound Sultan, Pherowshuz, Terry G, CartiAir, MiekHarry, Kefee, Osagz et al. Production credits also include; Jay Sleek, Ex-O, E-twinz, Pherowshuz, Kraft etc. The album will be released in August under the stable of MegaPhunk Records.

MI2 - M.I (Mister Incredible)
Most of y'all will agree with me that this talented young man who returned from the BET Awards a while back - where he represented Africa and also got pissed off by WALE, had the most anticipated Rap album in 2008. It's no longer news that Kelly Hansome of "Maga Don Pay" fame has been taking several shots at M.I and his entourage. Apparently, it seems M.I pays more primacy on replying diss tracks these days just like Ruggedman (As in, listen to tracks such as "Somebody Wants To Die",  "Nobody" featuring 2face, "Nobody Test Me" by Jesse Jagz....and you'll understand what I mean). We advice he ignores all the hate out there, and concentrate more on making good music (which he's pretty good at doing anyway), and he should also address other more important issues. However, Jude Abaga aka Mister Incredible literally has what it takes to storm the African rap industry for the umpteenth time.

Controversial Lagos-bred Rapper, A-Q, is also on our list. His new single "Names",which took shots at Jesse Jagz, Ruggedman and co. is already steering up a lot of controversy in the Nigerian music industry. I wonder what will happen when he eventually drops his full album and the remix of the same song "Names", which featured Iceberg Slim & Pherowshuz. (lol...I'll leave that to your imagination).

Young Hiphop veteran....Fecko Tha Emcee who dropped one of the most versatile African hiphop mixtapes earlier this year - "First Impression" also planning an album release sometime in November/December. The album is tentatively titled "Once Upon A Rhyme" ( interesting name for a rap album, isn't it?). According to the whizkid, It promises to be a world-class hiphop project, with guest appearances from the likes of American rapper "TALoNTED", Zimbabwean MC "Synik", Zambia's finest "Zone Fam", Str8 Buttah, Terry Tha Rapman, Chrest et al. By the way, Fecko is also an active member of the Boyz Are Not Smiling crew.

Vector The Viper aka V.E.C is also dropping an album titled "State Of Surprise" under the stable of YSG Entertainment. Sista Soul, Emmsong, Ade Piper et al. have spots on the album. Most people think this dude is just another Jay Z wannabe.....well only time will tell. Let's wait until his album drops. Personally, I think there's more to Vector that meets the eyes.

World famous academy rapper, Naeto C, seems to be quiet these days, but homeboi is also working hard to make sure his album SUPER C SEASON becomes super when it drops this season ( pun intended). Thus far, Naeto C has done a couple of collabs with YQ. And I think they both have a good chemistry when it comes to making pop music. By the way, if you haven't heard Wale's version of Naeto C's "Kini Big Deal", then like D'banj would say.."you're still sitting down on a long thing." FYI "Ako mi ti poju" by Naeto C  was also nominated at this year's edition of the HipHop World Awards. Watch out for Super C this Season.  Yes boss!!

H.O.D - Overdose
Also look out for OD's album "H.O.D" which will dropping under the stable of Xtreme music. Singles off the upcoming album such as "Got To Love Me", "Alujo" & "If I Catch You" featuring Terry Tha Rapman are still rocking the airwaves. Word reaching us is that O.D will be dropping some new hot singles pretty soon before the album drops eventually.

Mr. Correct aka Phero The Great aka Pherowshuz is also dropping an album this year. Just like his hit single, it promises to be "Correct!" By the way, DJ Atte and Pherowshuz are also working on a Mixtape. Recently, we premiered a track by Phero & The Faculty on our blog. Well, there is more! Boyz ain't smiling!

Veteran Emcee and former member of DaTybes, Onuorah Williams aka 2shotz is gearing up to drop his much anticipated album "I Am W.I.L.L.I.A.M".

VIDEO: Sakordie feat. Sway - Lay Away

Once again, Sakordie and Sway...reppin' for GH HipHop. Akon appeared as a cameo in the video. Can't help but wonder if Sarkodie is under the auspices of Konvict Muzik.

Teck-zilla, Rae & Fecko - Ill Musketeers

Fecko Tha Emcee teamed up with two of the award-winning Str8 Buttah boyz - Teckman & Mr. Rae on this ill joint aptly titled "Ill Musketeers". The song was produced by Teckzilla in the U.K and would be featured in "Once Upon A Rhyme" - Fecko's forthcoming album and Rhythm 93.7's DJ Tommy's forthcoming mixtape.

VIDEO: Samklef - Noni
